About Corten
Corten, or weathering steel, is a special type of steel designed to develop a protective oxide (rusty) layer on its surface. This is achieved by adding small amounts of copper during the steel-making process. Once formed, the protective patina drastically slows corrosion, while also giving the artwork its distinctive, rustic appearance.
In most environments corten will last a lifetime! It is used around the world both for its corrosion resistance and aesthetic properties. Some common uses include:
- Building facades
- Bridges (no painting/maintenance required!)
- Signage
- Outdoor sculptures
- Shipping containers
Note: Rusty runoff produced during the weathering process may cause staining to concrete, wood or other porous materials. This is most noticeable within the first 6 months of being outdoors.
Delivery condition: corten products are supplied in an unpainted, and un-weathered state. Due to the nature of the manufacturing process some minor imperfections may be present including minor surface rust, minor scratches, roughness around the cut edge of the profile or heat marks from welding. All of these defects will disappear as the weathering process develops the patina. We take great care to ensure our products are supplied in good condition, however if you feel you have received an item with defects or damage outside of what is described above, please get in touch.
For indoor use, corten can be finished in several ways including:
- paint
- powder coating
- letting patina develop outside then installing indoors
- clear coat over patina
Note: listed price is for product in raw (unpainted) steel. Please get in touch here if you would like a price for another option.
